I do object to it always being the "default" when it has a lot of tradeoffs in return for only slight benefits. Guess it's familiar, and easy for designers to tack onto their latest and greatest combat resolution mechanic. (It could be like that ex-GW guy saying his newest game is awesome cos it uses a d10!)

It just seems the "initiative" and "activation" sequence is usually tacked on as an afterthought to the design process - when really it should be a core aspect of game design.evilleMonkeighhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11998198938697175335noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8394074963215462822.post-70370462660779312762013-12-18T03:43:00.289-08:002013-12-18T03:43:00.289-08:00Great article, thanks Mike

Either way you dont know what is coming enxt. Good friction.

I also like system which randomise how many orders you can give during the turn. Battlegroup Kursk and its descendants do this in the finest of DBA traditions. You can have the best plan in the world but it wont help if units don't react, comms are scrambled etc.

I agree Deus Vult is excellent!

All of which are me saying that yes there are lots of options away from IGOUGO, but it is very much a matter of personal preferencePaul O'Ghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08611720164170399684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8394074963215462822.post-51829027364403150022013-12-17T06:42:23.997-08:002013-12-17T06:42:23.997-08:00I am planning on picking up some of the Mongols fo...I am planning on picking up some of the Mongols for Deus Vult, so I may end up buying the rules...David Dragehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15196258661144546430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8394074963215462822.post-19598298883135321812013-12-17T06:40:15.540-08:002013-12-17T06:40:15.540-08:00I recommend checking out Deus Vult - a set in the ...I recommend checking out Deus Vult - a set in the Crusades era. The game organizes units into divisions, then each division is represented by a card. Players stack cards in the order of activation, then alternate cards. It puts a lot of focus on Decisions type #1 - having your division go first is very important, but you can only chose one ....Chicago Terrain Factoryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13120517237019460964noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8394074963215462822.post-91748772895996602013-12-17T05:30:07.875-08:002013-12-17T05:30:07.875-08:00Very good article! The decision making in that where you add more dice to do more stuff with each figure, but increase the risk of ending your turn, seems to stike a good balance, and there is plenty of decision making.

I used to like the alternate activation system that Warzone used, as well...David Dragehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15196258661144546430noreply@blogger.com
